Hurricanes AND Winter Storms - February 13, 2025
Yes, friends, it's no picnic to be a perennial plant in the Galveston area. They go through blistering summers, hurricanes, and....snowstorms! Annual plants, such as French marigolds and broccoli, also have their weather obstacles to overcome, but at least it's not a mix of hurricanes AND winter storms. It's more like a "pick your poison" type of thing!
When talking about protecting plants from inclement weather, planning ahead (far ahead) is essential to ensure you have all needed supplies. Prior to expected freezing temperatures, covering tender plants with frost cloth is fundamental. We like to use N-Sulate (recommended by Maas Nursery), a medium-weight frost cloth that (if used correctly) can keep the area around the plant 6-8 degrees above the outside air temperature. When covering plants, "think tent, not popsicle" (as advised by Angela Chandler from Urban Harvest). See the picture below.
PS: beware that it is going to dip below 40 degrees next week on the island! No frost cloth needed, unless you have tropical fruit trees, such as mango or guava... READ THE FULL BLOG.

Paula Mian's Story
Paula holds an advanced degree in public policy and worked with data analysis for a few years before moving to Galveston to pursue a nascent passion for gardening. Working for an urban sustainable agriculture project in Galveston under Debbie Berger and John Sessions taught her most of what she knows about growing fruits and vegetables in our area. At SMART, she reads to and gardens with children aged 4- 8 in the afterschool programs of two elementary schools. She also brings gardening activities to children's classrooms from infants to fifth graders for the SMART Heart Partners program. Paula also motivates parents, caregivers, and teachers to bring children outside more often and to have their own gardens to get little ones excited about eating veggies.
Paula is bilingual in English and Spanish. She loves to bring the ukulele and sing with children whenever possible. She is the author of the gardening blog "Through the Rosemary Bush."
